At Doughtie’s, nothing gets us more excited than seeing fans take our classic barbecue and use it to create something unforgettable. We are spotlighting one of our loyal fans, Mike Jackson, from Norfolk, VA, who’s cooked up a game-changing twist on a Southern staple: Brunswick Stew—made easier and more flavorful with Doughtie’s Classic Barbecue.

Whether you’re feeding a hungry crowd or just craving comfort in a bowl, Mike’s version of this traditional dish hits every note: smoky, tangy, savory, and satisfying. Best of all, it’s easy to throw together with store-bought staples, a rotisserie chicken, and of course, the tang of Doughtie’s.

Mike's Quick Brunswick Stew Recipe Using Doughtie’s Classic Barbecue

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of Doughtie’s Classic Barbecue

  • 1 rotisserie chicken, shredded

  • 1 yellow onion, diced

  • 2 cloves garlic (or one tablespoon diced garlic in olive oil)

  • 1 large can San Marzano tomato puree

  • 1 can each: shoepeg corn, butter beans or baby limas, diced new potatoes (drain and rinse potatoes, use liquid from the other cans)

  • 1 box low-sodium chicken broth

  • 2 tablespoons chicken bouillon powder

  • ½ cup barbecue sauce (Mike recommends Sweet Baby Ray’s Sweet and Spicy)

  • 1–2 teaspoons each (to taste): garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, oregano, dill, black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes

Directions:

  1. Grab a large soup pot and sauté the onion and garlic until just starting to caramelize—this builds your flavor base.

  2. Add the shredded rotisserie chicken and Doughtie’s Classic Barbecue to the pot. Stir everything together until it’s heated through and smelling incredible.

  3. Pour in the tomato puree, chicken broth, canned veggies, barbecue sauce, spices, and bouillon powder. Stir well—this stew should be thick and hearty.

  4. Bring it all to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.

  5. Taste and adjust your seasonings to perfection.
