A Halloween Tradition: Brunswick Stew, Neighborhood Memories and a Little Doughtie’s Magic

Every year when October rolls around, my social feed fills with snapshots of costumes, pumpkin grins, and spooky neighborhood fun. It all brings back some of my favorite memories — crisp evenings, potluck tables overflowing with comfort food, and hayrides winding through the neighborhood. Time moves fast, and I find myself holding tightly to the simple moments that brought everyone together.

A Tradition That Brings Everyone Together

One tradition that always stands out is a dear friend’s annual Halloween Brunswick Stew. She told me years ago that she always uses Doughtie’s Barbecue in her recipe — and that her crowd counts on that recognizable tangy flavor every year. When she shared her “secret,” she emphasized two things:

  1. It feeds a crowd and makes everyone happy

  2. It’s basically a crockpot dump-and-go

Now that is my kind of cooking.

The Secret’s Out: An Easy Brunswick Stew Recipe

I finally asked her to pass along the recipe, and when I saw how simple it was, I couldn’t believe it. I knew Doughtie’s BBQ fans everywhere would want to try it. She graciously agreed that I could share her recipe on the Doughtie’s Facebook page.

Most of the ingredients come from the freezer aisle, which makes prep fast and foolproof. I’ve even swapped in frozen cooked chicken breast for fresh, and it turns out great. A rotisserie chicken works beautifully too — especially when time is tight on a busy Halloween night.

A Virginia Classic with Doughtie’s Flavor

And here’s something I love: while the origins of Brunswick stew are a little hazy, many historians trace it back to early Virginia cooking. There’s something special about knowing this recipe has roots close to home — and that a Virginia tradition like Doughtie’s Barbecue can play a part in such a historic dish.

Keeping the Tradition Alive

Whether you’re gathering with neighbors or just want something warm waiting when the trick-or-treaters come home, this stew is comfort in a bowl — simple, hearty, and full of flavor.

It’s more than just a recipe; it’s a reminder that the best traditions are the ones that bring people together — and that a little Doughtie’s magic makes it all taste even better.

Where to Find that Hometown Flavor

Around here, Doughtie’s is more than a barbecue — it’s part of the community. You’ll find it in Kroger and Harris Teeter stores throughout the region, as well as some independent grocery retailers like Wakefield Market and Games Farmers Market. Doughtie’s is always available online for fans who’ve moved away but still crave that hometown flavor.
